Abstract:
Adequate and quality electricity at an affordable price is a key element for socio-economic development of a country. Electricity is secondary or delivered form of energy produced from the primary sources e.g. fossil fuels, fissile materials, and renewable sources like hydro, wind, solar, tide, geothermal, bio-mass, ocean current etc. About 65% of global electricity currently is produced from fossil fuels: coal, gas and oil. The reserves of the fossil fuels are finite, geographically not uniformly distributed and in some counties the reserves are maturing. The prices of fossil fuels often fluctuate partly due to demand and supply imbalance and partly on geopolitics. The use of fossil fuels release enormous amount of greenhouse gases resulting global warming and climate change. Environmental pollution and transportation of large quantities of fossil fuels for bulk electricity generation are also issues of concerns. The thesis primarily presents electricity and nuclear power from the perspective of sustainability. Bangladesh scenario has also been touched.
